MY EXPERIENCE:
Moving to the United States after turning one year old, you dont get to experience your culture as much as you want. Especially when the plane tickets cost an arm and an leg; therefore, its very rare to go visit. However; When I do, they are probably the best memories I will ever have. Not only am I in my homeland with my family, but I finally get to see real authentic parts of my culture/roots. One of those memories is just recently when I went back in December and finally heard the tambores de candombe. Though sadly I was not able to see the drum group practice for the Carnival in Feburary. Just the sounds of the drums made me proud of my roots. Especially now that I am older and wanting to know more about my country!
I ask my mom what was it like watching the Candombe performers especially during carnival time. She said that it is truly one of the best experiences she misses. She said everyone is line up along the sidewalk watching the dancers dance to the rythmic beat of the drums. Everyone is dancing along or cheering as the groups passes by. It is one of those moments where all the people of Uruguay come together and celebrate their culture.
I watch so many videos on YouTube and I can just say my mother is completely right. Although I am not to familiar with Candombe, I know it is part of my family and I culture and I will always be proud of it. Not to mention, hopefully one day I get to truly expierence this magical moment in person!
